In our region (Region 2) quite a few teams release all 4 dogs from the 50 - 55 feet mark. In our case with our fastest team, we release (from 50+ feet) when we hear the box pedal being pushed.
You need a never changing point of reference at which the next dog is released. Half-way between the box and the jump is too variable (you can't see half-way). We tried releasing when the returning dog jumped the fourth jump. This didn't work as the next dog didn't reached maximum speed at the exchange line.
Yes, we are taking a chance but we only do this with dogs who are consistent and with a box we can trust. Problems such as a bobble at the box results in a hot pass and we are flagged.
It is difficult for the handlers - but we are having fun.
