        Why Tape?

To Prevent Mat Burns

If the mat is slippery, some dogs will slide to the box. Taping their legs stops mat burns on these dogs. We tape both front and back legs in this situation.

If we are running on "good" mats (ie. tuff spun) we will only tape the front legs (and on occasion we have not taped at all).

We tape in the following manner:

  • use vet wrap (4" wide) as a base
  • provide a strip of adhesive tape on the back of the back legs to act as a slider
  • anchor the vet wrap by using a band of adhesive tape above and below the vet wrap applied to the dog's fur.
  • we do exactly the same on the front legs except we only use half the width ofvet wrap.

Be sure to have the judge examine your dog's legs before you wrap (before the tournament begins).

If your dog had previously torn a dew claw, you should tape them with vet wrap and adhesive tape.
