Give Dave A Chance - Racing at the Rainbow Bridge

Chance has never met a stranger and he taught me all about the wonder breed known as Border Collies. So much so, that I soon became very active in Border Collie Rescue Texas.

I had seen flyball and wanted to get involved and didn't think any of my dogs were candidates for it. So, I started looking at all the herding breeds in rescue. When I saw Chance's pix, after looking at hundreds of them, I knew immediately he was mine. I got him when he was about a year old from another rescue group, his name was Dave. I started training and everyone in the flyball club was excited about him, he was learning very quickly and he was going to be fast.

Suddenly, Chance went lame and that's when I found out that Border Collies have a strong tendency towards hip dysplasia. Chance was diagnosed with bi-lateral hip dysplasia. We saw many doctors and tried many remedies and then after a year, I took him in for a total hip replacement on his right hip. The results were great and not only was he relatively pain free, but he was eventually able to get back into flyball. I kept the jumps low and controlled everything, but he was having fun. Exactly a year later, he was down again so we went back into surgery and had the other hip replaced. This one didn't go so well, there were complications with the parts and he had to go back in for 2 more surgeries. Through it all, he seemed to understand the importance of taking it easy and being in a crate and he never complained.

Now he has two good hips, and my little man of steel loves flyball and is living a full life. I let him compete if he's on a team with low jumps, or on a veteran's team. He's not the fastest Border Collie out there, but he runs with his heart. He's flawless, never has any errors and will run for anyone and everyone. He just loves to run.

He's also an avid swimmer, is trained in agility and is a great walking and hiking companion. But most important, he's my heart and soul.

Watch Chance compete in U-Fli.

Watch Chance race with Steppin' Woof at Reliant in July 2010.

Chance retired from racing August 2011, you can watch his retirement race.
