What is Flyball? Flyball is a relay racing event for dogs governed by the North American Flyball Association (NAFA). The race consists of two teams, 4 dogs on each team in two separate lanes running side by side. The course has a start/finish line, four hurdles, and a box. The dogs one by one race over the hurdles to trigger a spring loaded box that shoots out the tennis ball. When the dog returns over the 4 hurdles and crosses the start/finish line the next dog is released. The race is finally complete when all four dogs have completed the course without any penalties or errors. Competitions are either the best of 3, best of 5, or the best 3 out of 5 races depending on the format of the tournament. I like to refer to flyball as "Controlled Chaos". What dogs are good for Flyball? If your dog has a love for tennis balls or just loves to run and play, flyball may be just what the vet ordered. Flyball helps with dog socialization, obedience, and is just an all around good time for both dogs and owners alike. Any breed of dog can learn flyball, as long as the owner is willing to put in the necessary time and effort for training. Does my dog need any prior training? Some sort of obedience knowledge/training is very beneficial, almost necessary. Remember the dog will be around a lot of other dogs, and knowing how your dog behaves in these situations is highly recommended. A good way to get a head start, for what lies ahead in the flyball training, is to get the dog very interested in playing with tennis balls.
