Anchorage

$ (most entrees <$10)

  • Alaska Gourmet Subs
    601 W. 7th Ave, Anchorage
    Phone: 907-298-7827 / Fax: 907-297-7831
Alaskan specialty subs made fresh to order with smoked salmon, halibut, vegetarian specials. $7.95 daily specials include sub sandwich, soup, and soda.

  • Siam Cuisine
    1911 W. Dimond Blvd, Anchorage
    Phone: 907-344-3663
The best Thai food in the state, fresh, almost anything available vegetarian, and the service is wonderful.

  • Snow City Cafe
    1034 W. 4th Ave, Anchorage
    Phone: 907-272 2489
Hearty and creative takes on your favorite cafe food, breakfast until 5pm, great coffee and locally brewed beer. An everchanging art show and the odd night of music or poetry.

  • Taco King (3 locations)
    113 W. Northern Lights Blvd, 907-276-7387
    3561 E. Tudor Rd, Anchorage, 907-868-7611
    1330 Huffman Rd, Anchorage, 907-336-5566
This restaurant reinforces the idea that the most delicious ethnic foods are found in hole-in-the-wall joints. If you don't mind ordering at the counter and getting your food on paper plates, this is the place to go. They serve the usual American-Mexican fare, but you can also order food real Mexicans love, like torta de lengua, pozole, and menudo.

  • Thai Kitchen
    3405 E. Tudor Rd, Anchorage
    Phone: 907-561-0082
Not the most elegant dining atmosphere, but the GREAT Thai food makes up for it!

  • Thai Orchid
219 E. Dimond (Dimond and King), Anchorage
    Phone: 907-868-5226
Authentic, freshly made Thai Food. Very small and usually requires a wait, but it's our favorite Thai restaurant in town.

$$ (most entrees $10-15)

  • Bear Tooth Grill
    1230 W. 27th (Off of Spenard), Anchorage
    Phone: 907-276-4200
The "Grill" serves really good seafood pastas, steaks, veggie options, and a varity of mexican foods, and the same wonderful beers sold at the Moose's Tooth and Bear Tooth Theatre. This website mostly touts the theatre next door, and the pdf menu is incomplete. Enter from the parking lot, or you might end up entering the Theatre, which also has an eating section off to the side.

  • Gwennies Old Alaska Restaurant
    4333 Spenard Rd Anchorage
    Phone: 907-243-2090
Alaskana atmosphere, large servings, food varies from so-so to very good but worth it for "experience." Great brunch/breakfast place.

  • Little New Orleans
    8201 Old Seward Hwy, Anchorage
    Phone: 907-646-2226
Authentic Cajun New Orleans Cuisine you can get mild or spicy food. Awesome shrimp dishes, jambalya, and gumbo. Crawfish and blue crab too!

  • Moose's Tooth
3300 Old Seward Hwy (near 36th), Anchorage
    Phone: 907-258-2537
Great selection of pizza choices and a wonderful local microbrew selection, great Hungarian mushroom soup, ginger salad dressing is wonderful.

  • Organic Oasis
    2610 Spenard Rd, Anchorage
    Phone: 907-277-7882
Very tasty health-conscious food with lots of vegetarian options.

  • Peter's Sushi Spot
    3020 Minnesota Dr., Anchorage
    Phone: 907-562-5187
Unusual twist on traditional sushi. Fun atmosphere, large meeting areas, good bar and shushi bar in updated trendy decor. As almost all sushi places are now, it's on the expensive side.

  • 49th State Brewing Company
    717 W. Third Ave, Anchorage
    Phone: 907-277-7727
One of my favorite summertime activities is eating out on the deck overlooking the inlet. They have an extensive menu including seafood, pasta dishes, and pizzas, but I would stick to the gourmet burgers and brew. Simon and Seafort's, a few blocks down the street, has better seafood in my opinion.

  • Sourdough Mining Company
    5200 Juneau St, Anchorage
    Phone: 907-563-2272
Add says "dine in a gold mine," another Alaskana atmosphere, free shuttle from most hotels, food ranges from good to very, very good (some people say excellent). Across the road from the Alaska Wild Berry Factory which is a tourist "must see."

$$$ (most entrees $15-20)

  • Cafe Amsterdam
    530 E. Benson, Anchorage
    Phone: 907-274-0074
Incredible selection of "beers from abroad," wonderful European cafe atmosphere.

  • El Tango
Corner of Old Seward & Tudor, Anchorage
    Phone: 907-770-2888
Many selections from Argentina, Columbia, Puerto Rico, Europe, etc - something for everyone (including some vegetarian fare)- Argentine beef, wonderful paella, stuffed snapper. You'll never leave hungry and you should plan on taking a doggie bag home. Service is casually slow, so don't go if you are on a time table. Some nights there is South American dancing.

$$$$ (most entrees $20+)

  • Campo Bello
    601 W. 36th Ave, Anchorage
    Phone: 907-563-2040
Good italian food. Their calamari is excellent.

  • Glacier Brewhouse
737 W. 5th Ave, Anchorage (i know, downtown parking bites but that's the price of a great beer)
    Phone: 907-274-2739
Insanely great ales, lagers & barleywines. They've done a few lambics (yesss!). Ask for whatever is cask conditioned at the moment and you'll think you're in Edinburgh. Their seasonal/specials are always a treat, but their oatmeal stout is world class. Oh, i think they serve food too. All ale, lager, lambic is <$10 (cheap!).

  • Simon and Seafort's
    420 L St, Anchorage
    Phone: 907-274-3502
Great food, great sunset views of Sleeping Lady. They are a bit spendy, but the food, particularly the seafood, really is excellent here. We rarely order fish at restaurants since we're spoiled on fresh fish we catch ourselves, but S&S's asiago halibut is to die for. If you go early, you can get a 3-course meal for under $20.

Eagle River

$ (most entrees <$10)

  • Jalapenos
11823 Old Glenn Hwy, Ste 115, Eagle River
    Phone: 907-694-1888
Decent Mexican food at an inexpensive price.

Palmer

$ (most entrees <$10)

  • Vagabond Blues
    642 South Alaska, [map] Palmer
    Phone: 907-745-2233
Espresso, health food, vegetarian, homemade soup, fresh baked desserts & breads, breakfast/lunch.

Wasilla

$$ (most entrees $10-15)

  • Cadillac Cafe
Milepost 49 of the Parks Hwy, Meadowlakes
    Phone: 907-357-5533
Best pizza around (they use a real fire-brick oven), fresh sandwiches/wraps, salads, awesome selection of burritos, homemade rootbeer, espresso, beer/wine.

  • The Valley Bistro
405 E. Herning Ave (behind the clock tower), Wasilla
    Phone: 907-357-5633
Breakfast, lunch, pastries, a little pricey but delicious & fresh made food, quaint historic building, quiet atmosphere, loft area with laptop access, closed Saturday, no dinner hours.

$$$ (most entrees $15-20)

  • Evangelo's
2530 Parks Hwy (mile 40, across from Ford dealer), Wasilla
    Phone: 907-376-1212 / Fax: 907-376-1098
Fine Italian dining. Excellent pasta and seafood. Their version of devil's on horseback is to die for!

Girdwood

$ (most entrees <$10)

  • The Bake Shop
Near Alyeska Resort on Olympic Circle, Girdwood
    Phone: 907-783-2831
Serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a casual atmosphere. Famous for its unique breakfast items and freshly made sandwiches, homemade soups, and pizzas.

$$$ (most entrees $15-20)

  • Double Musky Inn
Mile 0.3 Crow Creek Rd, Girdwood
    Phone: 907-783-2822
New Orleans meets Alaska with big rewards for you taste buds and your spirits. Creole cooking is mixed with Alaska Seafood. This is a bit of a drive, but both the drive and the food are worth it.
