Flyball 101

What is Flyball?

A four-dog relay race with four small hurdles and a flyball box at the end of a 51-foot racing lane.  Each dog in turn must jump the jumps, return the ball by triggering the box with their feet and return over the jumps.  The first team to complete these tasks wins the heat.  Typically a race consists of three to five heats.

What makes a team?

Teams are usually comprised of three bigger dogs and a smaller height dog.  The little guy is quite important as his/her size determines the height of the jumps for the rest of the team.  The jump height range is a minimum of 7 inches to a maximum of 14 inches.

All teams may carry up to six dogs on their roster, with four dogs racing in each heat.  Teams are divided into the following divisions:

  • Regular - comprised of any variety of breeds, including mixes.  This may include multiples of the same breed or mixes.
  • Open - the "mix and match" division.  Dogs do not need to be on the same team; can combine to form a team for a specific tournament.
  • Multi-breed - each dog running in the heat must be a different breed.  Mixes are considered a breed regardless of their specific mix.
  • Veterans - for the guys and gals seven years and older.  It is similar to open as you can mix and match dogs from different teams to form a team for a specific tournament.  All dogs in this division jump seven inches, regardless of size.

What awards can be earned in flyball?

Points are awarded based on the time total for a four dog heat.  Teams that run under 24 seconds receive 25 points for that heat, under 28 seconds equal 5 points per heat and under 32 seconds gets one point per heat.  Each dog running the heat receives the same number of points for the heat.  All teams are seeded and grouped within divisions do you can run against teams of similar speed.  Ribbons are typically awarded for first, second, and third place in each division.

All dogs must be registered with the North American Flyball Association (NAFA) to compete in sanctioned tournaments.  Your Competition Racing Number (CRN) can be applied for online at www.flyball.org.

  • FD (Flyball Dog) = 20 points
