Murphy started his life with 9 brothers and sisters on a Dairy farm near Elmer, New Jersey.
He moved to Ringoes, New Jersey at the ripe old age of 9 weeks. He quickly adapted from his
large family environment to being the "top dog" in a one-dog home. Having had a Border Collie
before, we knew that he need a large yard in which to run and activities to keep him busy, as
well as some formal training. After completing Obedience class early in 2007, we went on to
Agility classes, with the idea of doing competition in this sport. However, the instructor,
noting Murphy's absolute obsession with playing ball, suggested that we try Flyball, a sport
that we knew nothing about!! Murphy started Flyball training in the fall of 2007, but had
to "drop out of school" due to a leg injury. In the Spring of 2008 we started attending practice
sessions with the GBF team. Murphy ran in his first tournament in October, 2008, and has been a
flyball dog ever since.
Murphy is very much a "people dog", wanting to greet everybody that he meets. He is also clearly
"ball oriented". If you pick up a ball, he will lay down and stare at it until you a) throw it or b)
hide it. He will run after the ball every time you throw it out in the back yard, and really does not
know when to quit. When the weather is hot, we have to force him to stop playing, or to stop running
the fence by the horses (usually with a ball in his mouth!!), because he is so hot and can hardly
catch his breath!
