| The Scoop on Fiver
Fiver is one of that very special breed of dog, the 'pound puppy'. He found me at Dartmouth SPCA on a cold January day in 1999.
Fiver has taught me many things. He has taught me about unconditional love, unselfish play, and endless joy, taught me to stop and smell the roses (and mailboxes and dandelions) and provided a whole education in nutrition and canine healthcare. I learned to feed a healthy diet to support his immune system weakened by over-vaccination. Fiver eats home-prepared meals based on a popular raw feeding system. But all things in moderation, he gets home-baked treats too, leftovers, and even sneaks the occasional potato chip from his dad, to prove he's not a total health nut.
Fiver's exuberance for play and boundless energy (could that be the border collie in him?!) dragged me into the dogsport world and that has been the best learning experience of all. His first love is flyball, where he barks endlessly and squeals in anticipation of getting to play. But we are also learning to play agility, where he enjoys running flat out in the larger spaces provided by that sport.
We are both crazy for dogsports, not just for the rush of competition, but for all the great friends we have met along the way. As a recent Ontario transplant, I can't think of a better way to meet people and make new best friends. I have my little Nova Scotian rescue dog to thank for introducing me to the great folks who play flyball and agility in the Maritime Region and to the most supportive and caring teammates we could ever hope to have.
